Students asked to write the 'history' of Pakistan

By Kamran Mohsin

TIP, November 18, the auditorium was full of students (mostly forced in by teachers) to attend a lecture by Mr. Javed Jabbar; a well-known writer, politician and media personality. The subject of the address was "Pakistan's unique past and unique future."

He told students that Pakistan is unique among the nations of the world in many respects among the other developed and impoverished countries. These include Pakistan's creation on the bases of religion, achievement of a separate country on a notice of 10 weeks, difficulties regarding capital and water at that time and other countless issues. This indicates that Pakistan survived in every difficult situation due to unpredictable reasons.

Mr. Javed Jabbar then went on to discuss the previous and current political situations of Pakistan and how due to some wrong decisions of politicians Army entered in the politics.

The talk moved in another direction when a student asked how this situation can be changed. He responded that we should acquire knowledge with understanding, share it with others, use it with confidence and last but not least develop political awareness and leadership amongst the youth.

He also stressed the need for rational understanding of Islam and other religions while respecting and tolerating others. The unjust and discriminatory incident of Sangla Hill shows we are not acting on the principles of Islam.

He mentioned as Pakistan has no history before 1947 so whatever we will do in future within the sphere of our influence that will write the `history` of Pakistan. So we should start doing something. It can be writing against prejudice to start a journey of thousand miles with this step. Any step in the right direction will lead us the progress.

More Food for the Worry Vault

By Furhan R. Hussain, TMM-1

Brushing the usual aside, TIP seems to be overshadowed, these days, by a cloud of misfortunes. For example, a few days back, the institute's 'Tower Point' bus had an accident near SMCHS that almost killed a number of people including a family of four on a motorcycle (husband, wife, a four-year-old and one-year old kid), as well as the driver of the rickshaw that was hit by the bus after it's brakes completely failed. The big, bright, yellow markings and text on the coaster made sure that the institute got its due share of publicity. The grapevine has it, that the bus driver had been complaining about the failing brakes since quite some time, but in vain, and was about to resign before an accident took place. On the fateful day of the accident, he was guiding the new driver of the point who was due to take his place.

The same bus, on the same day, almost ran into a petrol tanker on the highway. Had the tanker not run onto the road's dividing area, letting the bus only scratch it, TIP would have surely lost a fair number of diligent students.

The legend has it that the students of the 'Tower Point' are jinxed and bring misfortune to whichever bus they board; like when they boarded the faculty bus to get home due to the absence of the 'Tower Point' bus, the air-conditioning of the bus stopped working. Too bad I don't trust legends much.

Cafetaria Woes

Moving on, the cafeteria's high food prices and low standards due to the poor management of the Arabian Sea Country Club has been causing scores of angry students to complain all the time. This has led to meetings between the officials from both ends that did not yield satisfactory results. Very recently, a strike took place led by the college students and teachers where they boycotted the cafeteria altogether. One supposes that is the right step to take when the students and teachers start falling ill after consuming the cafeteria's food. A freshman even complained that this food adversely affected his voice box leading to a scary voice change. To add to a concerned person's worry vault, a raid on the cafeteria kitchen conducted by Ms. Shameem Noorani along with some students brought to light a serious breach in the contract that prohibited the cafeteria management to use any other cooking oil apart from a specified brand. One also noticed a sorry state of hygiene within the kitchen boundaries during the raid.

Let's hope that the coming days bring some positive changes that will make up for the inconvenience that the students have faced in the recent past.

Catalyst: Ache-a-demits

I woke up and the world outside was dark All so quiet before the dawn Opened up the door and walked outside The ground was cold I walked until I couldn't walk anymore To a place I'd never been There was something stirring in the air In front of me, I could see More than this So much more than this..

"More than this", Peter Gabriel

For all those who share the same perspective about academics, I welcome you to this segment of frivolous bravado and mindless ballyhoo of the QUACK, known as Catalyst, where I set out to travel the world of TIP with more bravado than common sense, and make a niche for myself amongst many.

Remembering the good old days, going to a College where attendance wasn't of great importance, work was seldom seen on the pages of our journals and the ease at which one could step out of the gates of the colleges and jump into their cars and buses and head home whenever they wanted too. Well how much of that is still true only we know as we stand within the territory of one of the best textile universities of Pakistan.

2 months down the line here I Am writing for The QUACK hoping that my work would be published and indeed criticized by the masses who read these lines on the walls of TIP.

As I quote these lines from one of Peter Gabriel's finest works "More than this", as these lyrics give you a hint of what went within many of the freshman present here today, the feel of excitement that took a new Turn as we walked out the doors of the auditorium, fear struck our mind with the rumors that traveled faster than the speed of light of the rag sessions carried out at this university which were nothing like what we hAd ever imagined or witnessed before, scared to the core all we wished was how the day would end and we could run to our designated points and head home, but wait there was more than the rag sessions heLd within the campus more was to follow as the journey begun, O did we not ask for Gods mercy to help us get through the horror of the acrobatic acts which were to be performed by and upon us. But to honest all was fun as the embarrassment was not confined to anyone on person as we were in the throes of becoming TIPIANS. As this was indeed, the onlY way to be known amongst our seniors, who are indeed very helpful to all of us.

Studies boosted off from the very firSt day on the calendar of our semester, new to the ways of teaching and the routine of the university, most of us took a very good start but for the many who took it lightly well after the first hourly results being announced everyone is surely getting in to the spirit of good academia. As none of us would want to be held behind probation lines (scary thought).

Well readers I am glad to inform you that the misery of reading my article is almost over as I end the first edition of Catalyst here by trying to raise the hopes of many freshman by saying that there is surely more than this to the journey of becoming professional individuals. And if we have failed to perform well in the first fracTion of the semester, don't loose hope there is so much more space still left for each of us to do better the next time. Today we mourn. Tomorrow we can sing and dance. As the Byrd's paraphrased scripture, for everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven.

Catalyst is a new regular column by Z-squared.

Success... A journey less traveled

The Road to Success An overview of the remarkable book "The Road to Success" by Faiez H. Seyal.

The objective of this book is to explore the true meaning of success to inspire and motivate you to take charge of your life. The writer has discussed in detail the myths and misconceptions about success and has recommended some practical ways to succeed in life. Let's travel through the book.

The book started by sharing the true personal story of the writer and then it deals with the misconceptions about success. And the later part deals with some feasible ways to succeed in life.

The commonly held beliefs are! like successful people are always rich. If it holds true than what do you think about great people like prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Abdul star edhi and Abraham Lincoln .all these people are known as extremely successful people of their times.

One of the biggest myth is successful people are born not made. It is true that every person comes with some special aptitude and individuality. What about a person who does not use these qualities. On the other hand others develop their ability through determination and hard work and out perform others.

People also blame luck for their failure. Who is actually lucky? Lucky stands for Labor, Understanding, Character, Knowledge and You. So I define it as Labor by You for success through Knowledge, Understanding and Character.

There are different meanings of success for different people .every person has its own objectives, aims and expectations in life. We don't have an exact definition of success .to get the real picture we should ask a particular person whether ha has achieved his aims or not. So every person has its own personal definition that comes only form self discovery.

First thing is accepting the responsibility of your life. What is responsibility? Its made of two words i.e. Response and ability, means it's your ability to response. Instead of blaming people, environment and circumstances the successful people always look inside. They have totally different paradigm about life. They take charge of their life and don't leave it to the will of people. For example Abraham Lincoln didn't have money to go to school. Instead of blaming luck he started borrowing and reading books in reply he cut down the lawns, washed cars and finally became the president of USA

Second is the positive thinking one of the traits you can find in every successful person.

Because 'we are what we think we are' so it extremely important to consider the hidden treasures of your mind. ALLAH has granted you the ability to think no other creature has. So learn to read the language of your mind and use it in making the important decisions of your life and feel the powers you possess.

Then learn from your mistakes. Take failure as an opportunity .It is the fee you pay for success. Just look at the failure of great people and organizations 1) coca cola in its first your of business sold only few thousand bottles.2) Einstein was labeled by his teachers as lazy minded. 3) Thomas Addison was failed 1000 times before the final preparation of light bulb.

Other than that you need time management, passion, trust in your abilities and lots more. The beauty of the book is that its not only deals with 'how to succeed' but also guides you how to remain on this track. The quotations the exercises the tips you will find in this book will give you 'a joy forever'.
